Description
This piece of chamber music includes different versions, depending on what instruments are available. All parts and versions are included in the Zip file.

My first choice of instruments for "Fir on the Oquossoc Shore, Singing" was determined by my summer musical companions in Maine, where our house on Rangeley Lake is opposite the island where the poet lived. The English horn has a tone so similar to the human voice that I decided to create a dialog between the horn and the singer, with the violin and piano playing supportive roles. I include an oboe part in case an English horn is not available. If a violinist cannot be found, use the score for piano, Eng. horn, and voice; the piano part has most of the violin notes in this version. I also include a concert pitch score for pianists who prefer that.

FIR ON THE OQUOSSOC SHORE, SINGING
by Hugh Ogden

My voice deepens through roots
as I grow, vibrates a base that

steadies the bite-thrust of
blizzards in winter, the heavy

heat of summer, autumn’s sinking
through leaves into solitude,

spring lake-ice wind-blown onto
shore rocks where gulls and ducks

squall over newly unfrozen fish.
Year after year I reach straight

up, my trunk and voice grounded
in incremental rhythms evergreen.
